How I Draw Comics by Zombiesmile How I Draw Comics by Zombiesmile
[update 9/9/13] Due to constant theft, I've been forced to add watermarks.

Lately I have been getting a lot of questions about tips and tricks to comic making on Tumblr (main:, comic project:… and here as well, so I decided to answer some questions this way. :3

Since I didn't exactly explain toning, here's a useful insight into how other professionals do it:…
Here's a video tutorials for Manga Studio:…
I myself am currently mostly copy-pasting high resolution screentones. (no resizing!)

Drawing a 156 page manga usually takes me about 8-12 months. (covers and promo illustrations included)

Other general tips to get started:
•Have fun and draw what you enjoy, not what others might want to see! (pressure from others kills motivation)
•Start with small project and try finishing them!
•Don't worry about it not being perfect. It's inevitable that the first few pages will look dumb if you look back.
•You will get better the more you draw.

As always, please do not repost this on any website without my written consent (especially 9gag or Funnyjunk, etc).
Thanks to everyone who keeps an eye out for me and my work!♥ ^ 3^

:)  Very useful information.  Not so much that we get lost, but enough that we could figure it out and do ourselves.  Nice. ;)

Yep that's about how I do it. The only difference is I also Ink old school style with pens and then I use contrast and the magic wand in photoshop to get rid of any pencil lines I couldn't erase. Also for dialouge and getting a professional look I use manga studio.

I also made my own font for dialouge. My professor showed us this website I absolutely love it because it makes my work feel much more personal.

What are water marks??
Chelia24 Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Usually, a watermark is something that signifies that that piece of art belongs to that artist.  Usually they put their name or alias in clear/transparent letters on top of each picture.

But when you upload to DA does the comic immediately come small or does it have to be small to zoom in?
Zombiesmile Featured By Owner Nov 16, 2014  Professional
you have to resize it before uploading.
GirlG1243 Featured By Owner Nov 16, 2014  Hobbyist Artist

This is nice! Thanks for sharing! For me though Linework isn't so much relaxing since I fix everything at that point. Hmm but it would be great to have that step being relaxing, I may need to start working better with my sketching apparently.
Thanks again for sharing! ^^

This is so awesome! I do the same thing too! Writing out ideas in a notebook ((or whatever blank paper lingers on my table, lol!)) and then I start typing it on MS Word. I also ask my younger bro and friends how the flow of my story is ((but sometimes I keep it to myself =P))

I draw on paper first, too! The same reason as you: It feels more natural~ :iconwhistleplz:

I'm still figuring how the other tools work on SAI, I'm more familiar with Photoshop and the transform tools are my saviors!! XDD

And thank you for the rest of the tips! :iconepictackleglompplz:

Do I have to use a scaner?
Zombiesmile Featured By Owner May 19, 2014  Professional
If you want to make a professional comic/manga, yes.
KawaChou Featured By Owner May 19, 2014  Student General Artist
I'm no mangaka pro and have yet to actually successfully write one, but I find it better to use a scanner because it makes it easier to transfer. While I use my camera now and then, it doesn't serve the same quality a scanner would making it harder to get certain details and the lighting would always be weird. So the question being, "do you have to use a scanner?" Technically, no, what ever fits your style best, is up to you, but if you have access to a scanner, it's advised to use it. Hope that helps! ^^

I have to make a comic for a school project, to tell a story about bullying in schools, and I have to use somewhat of a chibi style to make the characters more childish.
You helped me so much with this tutorial, I totally thought I was gonna fail that project ahh TTuTT
FancyPancakes Featured By Owner Mar 4, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
Awesome! I'm about to start working on my first big comic but had some difficulty figuring out how to go on, and this showed me the exact steps that I need to take!
Thank you so much for taking the time!! It helped a ton :)
