How I Draw Comics by Zombiesmile How I Draw Comics by Zombiesmile
[update 9/9/13] Due to constant theft, I've been forced to add watermarks.

Lately I have been getting a lot of questions about tips and tricks to comic making on Tumblr (main:, comic project:… and here as well, so I decided to answer some questions this way. :3

Since I didn't exactly explain toning, here's a useful insight into how other professionals do it:…
Here's a video tutorials for Manga Studio:…
I myself am currently mostly copy-pasting high resolution screentones. (no resizing!)

Drawing a 156 page manga usually takes me about 8-12 months. (covers and promo illustrations included)

Other general tips to get started:
•Have fun and draw what you enjoy, not what others might want to see! (pressure from others kills motivation)
•Start with small project and try finishing them!
•Don't worry about it not being perfect. It's inevitable that the first few pages will look dumb if you look back.
•You will get better the more you draw.

As always, please do not repost this on any website without my written consent (especially 9gag or Funnyjunk, etc).
Thanks to everyone who keeps an eye out for me and my work!♥ ^ 3^

Great comic, you're a big inspiration for me ^_^ Now I have somewhere to start! Sadly I probably can't afford Sai. Hehehe...

I can't draw for a good gosh darn but I can write pretty damn well for stories, though my grammar is little to be desired (it is not the best ^^; ) but a number of people like it, though I think it's hard to find people who say more then "It's good" and leave it at that. :grump: but anyhow I love your art style with your comics like these and your actual work, I think it's amazing!

Thanks for the tips! I want to make some comics, but had no idea where to start. This helps! One question, though: Can you use a tool (or tools) other than PS or Sai? Thanks.

What like comic paper do you recommend

I'm really happy I found this because for some reason reading guides like this really relaxes me. <3 Exactly what I needed to read!

I just recently adopted a method similar to yours.  Whenever I drew comics it was always just a shotgun blast of an idea immediately transferred to paper.  Storyboarding and thumbnailing things out definitely helps.  It was good to see this method drawn this way to show me that Im moving in the right direction.  Thank you.

Was it easy finding a publisher for your comics?
Zombiesmile Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2015  Professional
Finding publishers is easy. getting them to publish your work though, is not.
In my case I was active in the scene for many years before they approached me.

How I draw comics:
Go all in. (as in Just draw what comes to mind xD)

Shading and toning is boring and hard. I just use FireAlpaca's opacity to make shading area black and use the opacity and blend tool to make it look more like shading.
BonnieBunny0 Featured By Owner Jul 22, 2015  Hobbyist Digital Artist
How do I get the comic canvas type though? I've seen people do it on Muro.
Expiremental Featured By Owner Jul 6, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
Don't worry. I loath toning and shading to. So I usually am stuck with black and white sketches. 😓

same here but I am getting better with colors

Wow, this is so helpful! I wanted to make a comic since several years now, even had a try, but it was a failure. Most guides on comics aren't much help, because they show different options, do's and dont's, but they never show the process itself. Sometimes I got stuck because I couldn't decide which path should I take now. I guess all the time I just needed to see how people do it! Reading this was very helpful :) Thank you for sharing

Wow thank you! This is really helpful.
I´ve been making doodles and mini sketches for quite a while now and have a dozen ideas for Little stories or Situation Comics like you have here. Not Long ago I´ve bought a book by Margaux Motin and thought of maybe trying to do something like this too.

Never knew how to start or get on with that, but your advices here helped a lot so now at least I have an idea how to get started with my chaos of ideas.

wow thanks I really needed this. I'm actually planning a manga project right now and these guides are really helping me. But I'm not into it in full scale(yet) cause I'm still in high school and I'll be taking a huge test this year that'll decide my future (please wish and pray the best for me T^T) and got a lot of homeworks and assignments. But still I'll use this as reference in the future. THANKIES :D

:)  Very useful information.  Not so much that we get lost, but enough that we could figure it out and do ourselves.  Nice. ;)
dragonmaiden50 Featured By Owner Jan 23, 2015  Hobbyist General Artist
Yep that's about how I do it. The only difference is I also Ink old school style with pens and then I use contrast and the magic wand in photoshop to get rid of any pencil lines I couldn't erase. Also for dialouge and getting a professional look I use manga studio.

I also made my own font for dialouge. My professor showed us this website I absolutely love it because it makes my work feel much more personal.

What are water marks??
Chelia24 Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Usually, a watermark is something that signifies that that piece of art belongs to that artist.  Usually they put their name or alias in clear/transparent letters on top of each picture.
Dark-Soulest Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2014  Hobbyist Artist
Ooooohhhhhh, that explains so much. THANK YOUZ ^-^
