Red Bass Guitarby `Zombiesmile

[Edit] Being a total bass/guitar noob I apparently used ref for a 5 string bass...and mistook it for a guitar. anyhow, fixed the title etc. MY APOLOGIES!

This thing took me forever, haha. It turned out different from what I had in mind, but I suppose it's good practice.
It's the first time I used Google Sketchup for the background.

Anyways, I also owe ~manic-pixie a character meme, so here goes:

8 random facts
1. Kyle is short-sighted. He is supposed to be wearing his glasses (seen above) most of the time, but he is a little vain so he only wears them in class or at home when he's studying or watching TV.

2. He also plays the guitar and piano. His preferred instrument is the bass guitar, but his father (being a music teacher) taught him the other two as well. Kyle isn't excellent, but decent with both.

3. Kyle is quite popular with the girls. He's probably the guy who has had the most experience with 'relationships' in the band, though most of them have been very short lived and rather unsuccessful.

4. He likes wearing things around his wrist(s). Favourites are his leather band and the black rubber bracelets he is wearing in this image.

5. He is not into s/m even though he's wearing a sub collar. He just thinks it looks badass.

6. Kyle's used to collect comics still visits comic book stores from time to time to buy his favourite series.

7. He wrote his first song when he was 7. It was a birthday gift to his dad.

8. Kyle wants to learn to play double bass as well, and is currently saving up for one.

Oh wow, just incredible. How do you put so much thought and detail into your stories and characters? I write my own stories sometimes and I can create the characters quite well, get their personalities down to a T, I'm pretty good at their backgrounds, friends and family, even what their room looks like and what their style is. But when I get to what they look like my brain just stops and goes uhhh... There's just so many faces and people with their characters that there can't be a new look, a new face. Whenever I try, and I try alot, the bugger always looks like someone and then I get frustrated. I really love Kyle's look, definitely going to be looking further into Crash 'n' Burn.

Well to be honest, my characters are very old (Kyle in particular is about 6-7 years old) and this means I've spent a lot of time fleshing them out. In my head, they're pretty close to real people, which makes it easier to imagine what habits they'd have in their own private space.
Just imagine what they do in this space and draw signs and traces of it.

As for the character faces...that's a lot of practice and again, fleshing out. small things can define a character. (without his sideburns or beard, he looks totally different for example.)

This is an amazing and incredibly detailed piece. I stumbled upon your art, and it's all so lovely!
I just HAD to mention, though, that I love how there are posters of my absolute favourite band (Tool) upon the walls of this picture. xD
Crazy jealous at how you're able to add so much detail. Makes it realistic and unique to the character. I love that you can tell about this Kyle fellow just by seeing the items in his living space.

I was in a phase where I wanted to practice drawing interiors, but I always had trouble with ..well, things that aren't alive, like furniture and such. So I decided that adding personality with personal belongings of the character might loosen it up and make it easier to draw.

haha, tool is kind of Kyle's origin in a way! I started drawing him listening to their song Sober. (by which I was introduced to their music)
