Sketch to Inks Tutorial (Photoshop) by Zombiesmile Sketch to Inks Tutorial (Photoshop) by Zombiesmile
Well, not really a tutorial, it started out as instructions for my assistant, =kuddlekinss. XD
Then I thought, well... a lot of people have been asking for tutorials, so why not share.
Sorry it's sloppy and all!

Some details:
-the reason I duplicate the layer first is to compare sketch and line layers later, in case something goes off or looks different.
-I used Photoshop CS5.

The sample page is taken from Crash'n'Burn vol.2 (p51).

Might clean this up and present it properly at some point, but until then, enjoy.

This... has saved my sanity! Just tried this on one of my pencil sketches, worked out beautifully! For once I'm actually excited to color something digitally!

so... does that mean you use no ink at all? just pencils?

for this effect, yes. I have other drawings where I ink, but it depends on the results I want.
for an organic, rough look, I use this tecnique.

I see.
when you ink, do you use traditional ink or do you ink digitally?
(thanks for your reply :) )

I either use copic liners for when I plan to colour traditionally, or paint tool Sai when I plan on going the digital route. :)
no worries!

Cleaning the dirty parts is so hard that I left pencils to come back to inks. That's too much for me. May be becasue I make more small lines than you use to, and dirt parts are a lot. Who knows :/

You lighten the dirty parts until it goes away/is as light as you want them to be (in case you still want shades that you made on the sketch).

Huh, that sounds like a bit of work though.  Why not just erase?

Probably because it's easier to make mistakes with an eraser? I don't know, I don't use that method; I stick with an eraser.

Get a cheap wacom and just make a blank layer over the top and ink everything... This is too much work.

I ink that way too, if I want a clean sterile style. for this comic, I needed an organic, natural look. (it's a story about punk and metal. sterile is the last thing I want.) Also, inking manually takes me longer.
